CBC Endurance Race for 2010 Canceled

Please be advised that the Colorado Breeders Cup endurance race which is normally held in August has been canceled. Only those horses eligible to participate in endurance this year will get an extension of one year.

For instance, a CBC foal that is four or five years old may participate as a five and then six year old in 2011 and 2012. An otherwise eligible foal by a stallion whose breeding has sold in 2010 that is five years old may participate in our endurance race in 2011 as a six year old. And a four year old may participate in 2011 as a five year old and again in 2012 as a six year old, but only if that foal's sire is a nominated stallion in 2012, and the breeding sells.

If you have questions or need additional information please contact Liz Wheeler, the CBC Events chairperson at lizw37@aol.com.

Changes to Regulations Have Been Approved!

There have been a number of changes to the Colorado Breeders Cup to help enhance the program.  Below is a summary of those changes, for complete rules please go to rules.  If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at:  info@coloradobreederscup.com

Stallion Owner Payback of 10% -- The Top Stallion Award will no longer be a monetary award, instead this 5% of payback will be put back into the total payback.  In addition, 10% of EVERY entry's payback will go to the stallion owner if that stallion is nominated in the program for the participation year.  This is an effort to reward all owners of stallion's who participate in the program with limited impact to payback for participants.

Race Payback Used For Sponsorship  -- The estimated payback for the participation year will be used to Sponsor the Colorado Breeders Cup race.  This money will then paid out to the winners via typical stakes payout scale.  This is an effort to put the payback money on the front end and increase the purse and prestige of the CBC race.  This will create a increased partnership between the track, CBC and COBRA and have very little impact on race participants overall payback.

Deadline for Entry in CBC Competition/ Events  -- Close of entries shall be one (1) week week prior to the scheduled day of the single event or scheduled first day of the designated show. Late entries will be assessed a $500 penalty, no entries will be accepted after 6 pm the night before the class or scheduled first day of the designated show.  (Race entries will be submitted per the requirements of the race secretary.)

High Point Award --  This is a new award that is presented to the owner/lessee on behalf of the horse earns the highest cumulative point total for all CBC events for that participating year. All entries placing one (1) through five (5) in each competition will earn one (1) point for each placing below them plus one (1) point for their placing, not to exceed five (5) total points per single event/ class.  This Award receives no additional payback and was awarded for the first time this year.

Second Seminar with Scott Benjamin a Hit!

Scott presenting at recent seminar.

The second breeding seminar of the series with Scott Benjamin was a huge hit, held Nov. 7, 2009 at By The Weghe Farm just south of Franktown.  This seminar was a follow up to the previous fall's seminar and after a brief review, got more in depth with the particular strengths and weaknesses of the most popular sire lines used today.

Estansia (Monogramm x *Erwina) with Scott Benjamin."I could listen to Scott for hours," concluded Marsha Epstein, and echoing the thoughts of many participants.  "It was more specific, which is what I wanted this time around."  Scott's presence in Colorado is generating national appeal as participants to the seminar were not just local.  It was pretty close as to who traveled the farthest between Strawberry Banks Farm breeding manger Michelle Valone and Episode Farm owner Patti Murphy from North Carolina.

In addition to just being a classroom, the participants also got to be hands on with some horses generously supplied by CABA members.  This added a much appreciated dimension of being able to see actual examples of what was talked about in the presentation; 3 stallions and 3 mares were presented.

Colorado Breeders Cup Payouts Are Now Final!

The final Colorado Breeders Cup event of the 2009 season finished up on September 26, the 25 mile Endurance Ride at the Urban Challenge. The event was won by Kenlyn Musical Knight by Awesome Knight and owned by Linda Fisher. The Reserve Champion was WA Borkata (WA Pejczyk x *Boruta) owned by Wintersteen Arabians and ridden by Kara Wintersteen.

This concludes the 2009 events with payouts to the winners was as follows; $1,249 for Champions, $694 for Reserve Champions and $277 for Top 5's in all CBC events. The Top Stallion Award of $1,475 again goes to WA Pejczyk in the most competitive competition to date. 19 different stallion's progeny competed with 49 entries. The CBC is also awarding the first High Point Award for the highest point accumulation in all CBC events by a single horse. The winner is WA Elegancja (WA Pejczyk x Estansia by Monogramm) owned by Tisa Meisel. The 5 year old gray mare won the Western Pleasure Championship, Reserve Champion in the Hunter Pleasure and Top 5 in Mares SHIH. Congratulations to all the winners!

Colorado Breeders Cup Main Ring Results are In!

MWF Sshow Thyme -- CBC Champion of 3 Y Old Filly

The main ring breeding, in-hand, and performance classes for the Colorado Breeders Cup finished up Labor day weekend at the CAHC Fall Show. With only one event yet to stage, the CBC Endurance Ride, participation looks to have the highest number of entries in the program's history. Despite lower stallion sales, a record number of 18 different stallion's progeny have taken part with 9 different sires having champion's at the show. Psyche Safari had the first champion when his gelded son Psynbad won the reining championship for Gerald Martinez edging out WA Emfatyk by *Ecaho ridden by owner and breeder Bob Wintersteen. The RHR Mercedes filly DD Enchanting Marlena led off the Breeding Classes as Champion Weaning Filly for Denise White of Penrose, CO. Perhaps the most competitive class was the deep weanling colt class represented by four different sires and won by the son of Polish import *Hun, MWF Elasshun for CD Harbridge. The weanling colt went on to be named Jr. Champion Colt in the open division. By evening's end, the Top Stallion standings had changed for the third time this summer with Psyches Safari taking a slim lead over race sire KA Czubuthan.

The next day featured the premier performance events and the most competitive for the CBC. The WA Pejczyk daughter WA Elegancja won her second consecutive championship in Western Pleasure, again ridden by April Law for Tisa Meisel, marking her 8th Colorado Breeders Cup Championship in WA Elegancja's career! The Hunter Pleasure Champion was the bay First Cyte daughter Wolfsong Melody ridden by Diane Underwood for Judith Weber. WA Elegancja took command of the High Point standings coupling her Western Pleasure win with her reserve championship in the Hunter Pleasure class, enabling her sire to regain the lead in Top Stallion standings.

MW Bonnie Z Romps to Victory in Inaugural $9,000 Colorado Breeders Cup Stakes!

The field of the CBC Stakes turn for home.

The five rivals in the inaugural $9,000 Colorado Breeders Cup Stakes proved no match for Brenda and Brent Beeman's chestnut mare MW Bonnie Z.  The five year old had come to Colorado for her new owners already a stakes champion and winner of over $17,000 in Michigan, however had been winless so far at Arapahoe Park.  She turned her summer season around, however, in just over a minute and a half as the KA Czubuthan daughter stalked her paternal sibling Tyme For Royalty before wrestling away the lead with less than an 1/8 of a mile to go in the 7 furlong test.  Tyme For Royalty settled for second with the third KA Czubuthan progeny and last years CBC Champion Finales Majic SWA in third.  MW Bonnie Z was bred in Texas by Morris Woods and trained by Ken Danyluk.  With a top 3 sweep, KA Czubuthan jumped to the top of the Top Stallion Award standings after 3 events.

Brent and Brenda have been involved with the Colorado Breeders Cup for a number of years and their Box Elder Creek Ranch is only about 20 minutes from Arapahoe Park.  Consequently they had plenty of local support and congratulations from those in attendance.  Brenda was ecstatic with her mare's performance.  "We may retire her after this season, but who knows the way she is currently racing -- either way a great feather in her career!  She will be a tremendous broodmare for us."

In the previous two years, the CBC race event was held in conjunction with another scheduled race where CBC participants were ranked according to their placing relative to each other, not the overall field.  This year, however, there were enough CBC progeny on the backside to hold the race on its own.  O'Malley's Mercantile for the second year in a row donated 1,000 pounds of feed to the race with 500 lbs. going to the winner and 100 pounds to the next 5 participants.  We are deeply grateful to Arapahoe Park and COBRA for their support, and especially Valerie Lynn's tireless efforts in this regard.  With such a competitive race for its debut, the CBC stakes can look forward to being important part of the summer race meet.

This was all part of Arabian Race Day, which in addition to the CBC Stakes, held an allowance race sponsored by the Colorado Arabian Horse Club.  Also, the days participants were treated to morning works, schooling at the gates, a handicapping seminar, backside tour, shadowing trainers and lunch at the horseman's kitchen.  It was a great day of Arabian Racing!

MW Bonnie Z's connections celebrate in the winners circle.

CBC Sport Horse in Hand at Estes Parks Boasts Increased Participation!

HLL Allyczyk winning Stallion/ Gelding SHIH

The Colorado Breeders Cup Sport Horse in Hand was the opening event for the 2009 season at Estes Park.  The Filly/ Mare division was the largest CBC class to date with 7 entries.  The class was won by CD Harbridge's MWF Sshow Thyme (Pyro Thyme SA x S Show Me).  The 3 year old bay mare scored 79 points to secure the championship.  Just behind her, was the 2 year old gray filly WA Phylarka by the recently exported Ontario HF who now stands in Poland.  The Reserve Champion is out of Phyllan and bred and owned by Wintersteen Arabians.

The Stallion/ Gelding division was bested by the WA Pejczyk gelding HLL Allyczyk out of the Brazilian import *Allysia HCF, full brother to the 2007 Colorado Breeders Cup SHIH Champion Allyshah.  The bay 4 year old was bred and owned by Judy and Kelley Harding of Harding Living Legends.  The Reserve Champion of the male division was the Santa Fe V son Have You Heard PA out of P Morningbird and owned by Mark Rochester.

Six different stallions were represented during the classes.  WA Pejczyk jumped ahead in the Top Stallion Award competition earning 10 points with Pyro Thyme SA in following closely behind.  The next scheduled event will be the inaugural Colorado Breeders Cup Stakes.  This is the first time the race will be only for CBC eligible horses.  In addition to normal CBC payout, the horses will be racing for an estimated $9,000 in purse money!  See above for details.
